Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will to, you can.
On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.
The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.
Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, hot water facility could be free at lower elevation.
No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.
Yes. Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.
Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during off season.
It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.
For Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
DIFFICULTY & FITNESS
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek 13 Days is rated moderate — accessible to fit beginners and rewarding for experienced trekkers alike. The additional Poon Hill and Ghandruk days add variety and cultural depth without significantly increasing the physical challenge. Daily walking times range from 4 to 7 hours, with the longest day being the descent from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo on Day 9.
TrekkingKey recommends beginning physical preparation 6–8 weeks before departure with regular hiking, jogging, cycling, and cardiovascular training. Children aged 10 and above with good stamina are welcome on this trek. The 13-day pace gives your body additional time to adapt to altitude, making it one of the safest and most enjoyable ways to experience the Annapurna Sanctuary.
ACCLIMATIZATION & SAFETY
The 13-day itinerary is carefully designed to ascend gradually, with acclimatization built naturally into the route. The additional days at lower altitude in Ghorepani and Ghandruk (Days 3–5) allow your body to adapt progressively before entering the high-altitude Sanctuary corridor. All TrekkingKey guides are trained in wilderness first aid and altitude sickness recognition, and carry emergency oxygen on every trek.
Travel and medical evacuation insurance is mandatory for all TrekkingKey trekkers. We strongly advise consulting your doctor before departure regarding altitude medication (Diamox).
AMS Prevention Tips:
- Drink at least 3–4 litres of water daily throughout the trek
- Ascend slowly and steadily — never rush the climb to ABC or Machapuchhre Base Camp
- Avoid alcohol and smoking at altitude
- Consult your doctor about Diamox before departure — take at the first sign of AMS
- Eat regular, nutritious meals and rest properly each evening
- Descend immediately if severe headache, vomiting, or confusion develop — your guide will assist
POON HILL — THE GREAT ANNAPURNA SUNRISE
At 3,210m above sea level, Poon Hill is one of the most celebrated sunrise viewpoints in the entire Himalayan range. Reached by a 45-minute early-morning climb from Ghorepani, the hilltop observation tower offers a 180-degree panorama of extraordinary breadth — from Dhaulagiri I (8,167m) in the west to the full Annapurna massif in the east, including Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, and the sacred Machapuchhre (Fishtail).
The sunrise itself is a spectacle of light and colour that few trekking experiences in the world can match. As dawn breaks over the Himalayan horizon, the peaks emerge from darkness in a slow golden glow — alpenglow sweeping across glaciers and ridgelines that stretch as far as the eye can see. Poon Hill is the moment on the 13-day itinerary that reminds you why Nepal is called the roof of the world.
GHANDRUK — HEART OF GURUNG CULTURE
Ghandruk is one of the largest, most beautifully preserved, and most culturally significant Gurung villages in Nepal. Perched on a hillside at 1,940m above the Modi Khola gorge, the village commands extraordinary views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchhre — peaks that feel close enough to touch from the stone-paved lanes and traditional courtyard homes of the settlement.
The Gurung Museum in Ghandruk offers a fascinating insight into the history and traditions of this remarkable mountain people — from their ancient Bon-influenced Buddhist practices and unique festivals to their legendary military service in the British and Indian Gurkha regiments. Ghandruk’s stone houses, terraced fields, traditional dress, and warm family-run teahouses make it one of the most authentic cultural experiences on any Annapurna trek.
BEST TIME TO TREK
- Spring (March – May): Rhododendron forests burst into spectacular bloom along the Ghorepani and Ghandruk trails, painting the hillsides red, pink, and white. Poon Hill is at its most colourful. Temperatures are warm and pleasant, and mountain visibility is outstanding.
- Autumn (September – November): Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, delivering the best mountain photography of the year. October is the finest month for both Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp, with crisp air and exceptional visibility across the full Himalayan panorama.
Winter (December–February): Quiet trails, clear skies, and cold temperatures — especially at Poon Hill and ABC. Suitable for well-equipped cold-weather trekkers. Monsoon (June–August): Not recommended due to heavy rainfall, leeches on lower trails, and reduced mountain visibility.
