Everest Gokyo Lake Trek – 13 Days

Welcome to Kathmandu — the ancient capital and vibrant cultural gateway of Nepal! A TrekkingKey representative will be waiting at Tribhuvan International Airport to greet you and transfer you comfortably to your hotel in Thamel. In the evening, sit down with your trek leader for a comprehensive briefing covering the full itinerary, route, gear requirements, permits, and safety procedures. End the night with a welcome dinner featuring delicious traditional Nepali cuisine.

Spend your second morning exploring Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), and the historic Durbar Squares. In the afternoon, complete your final gear check and packing with your TrekkingKey guide. Stock up on any last-minute supplies in Thamel, Kathmandu's legendary trekker's district.

Board your early morning scenic flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla (2,860m) — one of the most thrilling airstrips in the world. Meet your TrekkingKey porter crew and begin your trek through Chaurikharka village, descending gently along the famous Dudh Koshi River valley to the welcoming Sherpa village of Phakding. Pass traditional Sherpa farms, mani walls, colourful prayer flags, and your first views of the magnificent Khumbu peaks. A gentle, exhilarating introduction to the Everest region.

Note: During peak seasons (March-May and September-November), Lukla flights depart from Manthali/Ramechhap Airport, approximately a 4-5 hour drive from Kathmandu. TrekkingKey manages all ground transport.

One of the most exciting days of the trek. Follow the Dudh Koshi River through rhododendron and pine forests, cross the legendary Hillary Suspension Bridge over a dramatic gorge, and pass through the Sagarmatha National Park entrance checkpoint at Monjo. The trail then rises steeply through Jorsale for the final, breathless climb to Namche Bazaar — the Sherpa capital and trading hub of the Khumbu. On clear days, your very first glimpse of Mount Everest reveals itself above the ridge of Nuptse.

A vital day for your body to adapt to the altitude before heading higher toward the Gokyo Valley. Take an optional morning hike to Syangboche Airport and continue to the iconic Everest View Hotel (3,880m) — arguably the finest panoramic viewpoint of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku accessible from Namche. Visit the fascinating Sherpa Culture Museum to learn about the history of Sherpa mountaineering. Explore Namche's colourful market, ATMs, bakeries, and gear shops. On Saturday, don't miss the lively Haat Bazaar — the traditional weekly trading market.

Today the trail diverges from the classic Everest Base Camp route as you turn toward the Gokyo Valley — one of the most peaceful and rewarding branches of the entire Khumbu trail network. Trek across high slopes above the Dudh Koshi River with sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. Descend to Phortse Thanga for lunch, then climb steeply through magnificent rhododendron forests and past tumbling waterfalls to the high-altitude settlement of Dole — your gateway to the Gokyo world.

A shorter but rewarding day's trekking through wide-open high-altitude terrain above the treeline. The trail follows the expanding Dudh Koshi valley with dramatic views of Machhermo Peak to the west and Cholatse to the east. Far up the canyon, the imposing mass of Cho Oyu (8,201m) — the world's sixth highest peak — comes into full view for the first time. Arrive at Machhermo, a small but charming settlement and a key acclimatization point before reaching Gokyo.

One of the most visually stunning days of the entire trek. The Dudh Koshi valley widens dramatically as you ascend through the villages of Pangram and Longponga, passing the outlet of the first Gokyo Lake — the smallest of the chain. Continue along the edge of the mighty Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's longest glacier, stretching for over 36 kilometres from the slopes of Cho Oyu. Arrive at Gokyo village beside the breathtaking third lake, Dudh Pokhari — a sacred turquoise jewel at 4,750m reflecting Cho Oyu in its still waters. The sacred Gokyo Lakes are revered by both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims as one of the holiest freshwater systems in the Himalayas.

The crown jewel of the entire trek. Rise early and make the steep but exhilarating climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357m) — one of the greatest mountain viewpoints anywhere in the Himalayas. From the top, a 360-degree panorama reveals four of the world's six highest peaks simultaneously: Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,201m). Stretching endlessly below is the Ngozumpa Glacier in all its immensity. Many trekkers consider this view even more spectacular than the view from Kala Patthar. Return to Gokyo village for lunch and spend the afternoon exploring the fourth and fifth Gokyo Lakes — rarely visited gems of extraordinary beauty.

Begin your gradual, satisfying descent from the high Gokyo Valley, retracing your steps past the glacial lakes and down through the widening valley of the Dudh Koshi River. The familiar peaks — Cho Oyu, Kangtega, Thamserku — accompany you as you descend through Dole and continue down to the lower, warmer settlement of Phortse Thanga. The altitude drop is a relief after days above 4,500m, and the greener, lusher valley is a welcome change of scene.

Continue your descent through the Khumbu, passing through Khumjung village (3,780m) — a charming, traditional Sherpa settlement home to the Hillary School and the famous Khumjung Monastery, which houses a legendary yeti scalp. The trail rewards you with one final day of panoramic mountain views before arriving back in the bustling energy of Namche Bazaar. Celebrate the achievement of Gokyo Ri with your TrekkingKey crew over a hot meal and a well-deserved rest.

The final day of trekking. Descend from Namche through familiar forests, suspension bridges, and Sherpa villages back to Lukla — where your mountain adventure began. The trail is well-known and the pace is brisk, energized by the knowledge that you have completed one of Nepal's most rewarding treks. Arrive in Lukla in the afternoon for a well-deserved celebration dinner with your TrekkingKey guides and porters.

A short 35-minute morning flight returns you from Lukla to Kathmandu (or via Manthali/Ramechhap during peak season with a 4-6 hour drive). Transfer to your hotel for rest, a hot shower, and time to reflect on an extraordinary journey. In the evening, TrekkingKey hosts a celebratory farewell dinner at one of Kathmandu's finest Nepali restaurants — a perfect end to a perfect adventure.
